Every child has it’s own learning curve and pace in acquiring motor skills. It is important to detect children with motor development problems in time, to initiate appropriate therapy.

The Smart Play Sets project studies whether it is possible to develop games that detect children with motor development problems. The toys that we use in this project contain for instance accelerometers and a gyroscope. While playing, sensor data is collected. The project studies whether these sensor data can be used to predict whether a child has motor development problems or not. If this is the case, children can be tested in a fun and easy way.

Moreover, we try to adapt whether it is possible to adjust the level of the game to the motor skill level of the child. Children might loose their focus if the game is too difficult, while they might get bored if the game is too easy. Adapting the level of the game will help them stay motivated.

This research is conducted by a multidisciplinary team consisting of the following research groups of the Hogeschool van Amsterdam: Human Movement Sciences, Play and Civic Media, and Digital Life.
