Applications in AI

The Digital Life research group was well represented in mid-April at ICT.OPEN, NWO's annual two-day event. This meeting aims to bring together scientists from all ICT research disciplines and industries to meet and share knowledge.
Somaya Ben Allouch, lecturer at Digital Life, and Shihan Wang, formerly at Digital Life and currently associate professor at Utrecht University, chaired the so-called “Applications in AI” track this time.
Applications in AI
In recent years, and especially since the public availability of large language models last year, AI has been in the spotlight. Ideas and concepts abound, but making AI part of our daily lives and processes requires more, namely implementations, validations thereof, and awareness of the consequences and implications of its use.
This track featured contributions on applications of AI that explore its use in the real world. Specifically, these focused on research conducted and validated in a relevant environment, along with its societal implications. As AI is a key technology, cases were discussed from all sectors and domains, from healthcare to industry and from energy to security.
AI in healthcare
One of the presentations was by Stephanie Kramer, lecturer-researcher at Digital Life. She took the audience through the research 'Who Takes Care?' that has focused on developing an intelligent care environment. specifically to support healthcare professionals.
The problem this research project addresses is the high workload of care professionals in dementia care. With a rise in the number of elderly people with dementia, the demand for care is increasing, while the shortage of care professionals is growing. By using smart technological innovations such as an Intelligent Care Environment, this workload can be greatly reduced.
This research will be followed up so if it is up to Digital Life, they will be back next year at ICT.OPEN!
