Promotion grant for teachers assigned to Digital Life

Marianne Bossema, researcher at the Digital Life lectorate and teacher at the HBO-ICT program, has recently been awarded the Doctoral Grant for teachers!
This PhD grant from the Dutch Organization for Scientific Research (NWO) offers lecturers support in writing a dissertation. The aim of the grant is to enable teachers to gain research experience in order to improve the quality of education and strengthen the connection between universities and schools.
From January 2023, Marianne will focus on research into social robotics and generative AI to support and improve creative experiences for older adults for five years.
The more creative the older
Extensive research has shown that creative activities can promote the health and well-being of older people. At some point in their lives, it becomes more difficult for people over 65 to participate in the creative activities that give them pleasure.
Creative with technology
Social robotics and generative AI offer unique opportunities to keep creative activities accessible and engaging. A social robot is a robot that can perform certain non-physical tasks for you using technologies such as speech recognition, facial recognition and emotion recognition. Generative AI refers to programs that can use existing content such as text, audio files, or images to create new plausible content. Generative AI allows computers to learn the underlying pattern related to the input and then use that to generate similar content.
Human-Machine Interaction
Marianne's dissertation will answer unanswered questions about the added value of creative activities and the specific wishes and needs of the elderly. Research into this contributes to the well-being of the elderly, and also to the development of theories about the creative collaboration between man and machine.
