Sensor monitoring is based on sensor network technologies placed in the home environment and is used to observe and recognize individuals’ daily functioning (activities of daily living (ADL) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL)). This network consists of a combination of simple sensors that are installed in fixed locations and register in-home movement. The sensor data are processed in a computer that infers the daily functioning which the participants perform in their homes. The use of sensor monitoring enables the measurement of daily functioning and facilitates the early detection of changes in functional status of independent living older people.
