Nazli Cila of Digital Life becomes associate professor Learning Community ‘Smart Systems’

25-02-2020

At the start of 2020, the Digital Media & Creative Industry Faculty of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences started with Learning Communities. These communities are a new form of cooperation between programs, research groups and external partners in which current topics are explored. To lead the Smart Systems community, Nazli Cila, a researcher at the Digital Life research group, was recently elected senior lecturer.

With the help of sensors that make it possible to collect and process data, many systems and products around us have become more 'intelligent'. Systems / products with information processing capabilities and connected to the internet fall under the description of these LC Smart Systems. Thanks to this connectedness and intelligence, these systems and products can be situated (recognize the context in which they find themselves), be personalized (to meet the needs of the user), be adaptive (change of interactions with users), be proactive (anticipate user plans) and be autonomous (make decisions).

In other words: we increasingly live in a world where literally everything is connected to the internet and these systems have an impact on all areas of people's daily lives, including our physical environment. The aim of this Learning Community is therefore to contribute to shaping this new world by converting the knowledge and insights that teachers, students, researchers and the professional field together together into designs and prototypes from both research and education as well as professional practice.

Nazli herself adds on the subject of 'Smart Systems': 'It is an emerging topic with various points of attention: a technological perspective (with attention for, by example, algorithms); a design side where transparency, ease of use and user enjoyment need improvement; and the aspect of giving meaning: how can 'smart systems' offer a meaningful addition to daily life, also in line with ethical aspects and user values? With the new Learning Community we are happy to tackle these challenges together with students, researchers, companies and institutions as well as the users themselves, whereby we will initiate new educational programs and research projects.'

On behalf of all colleagues of Digital Life: 'Congratulations on this new step within the faculty and your career, Nazli!'
