AUAS awaiting new master Applied AI in response to shortage of AI experts

15-12-2021

Trust in the future

Marie Postma, chair of the accreditation committee, opened her online feedback with the words: 'This master's AAI is a study that I would like to follow! Otherwise I will send my child to this course!' She gave the team a big compliment when it comes to all the preparatory work, expressing her confidence in the future.

The accreditation panel has thus issued a positive recommendation to NVAO, the Dutch-Flemish Accreditation Organisation. The final accreditation decision is expected at the beginning of March 2022. With a 'green light', the program will start in September of the same year.

Progress to AI expert

A strong point of the new programme, the panel emphasized, is that it links technology to public values. The AUAS lecturers and researchers involved are positively critical of the possibilities of AI: artificial intelligence can, but does not always have to be the solution to problems in society. With the Master's, the AUAS therefore aims to deliver critical experts.

Students at the AUAS and other higher education institutions will soon have the perfect opportunity to transfer from their (technical) Bachelor's to this Master's.

A dream come true

The enthusiasm among all those involved splashed off the screen when hearing the evaluation. 'It's like a dream come true!' That's how Pascal Wiggers, associate professor of Responsible AI, expressed his feeling of happiness.

Saskia Robben, senior lecturer of the Learning Community AAI and researcher at the Digital Life lectorate, was also very proud: 'With the Learning Community I enjoy bringing people from different disciplines together and that is exactly what we are doing in the Master's. also provided: not only experts from the algorithms and techniques, but also from the design of a complete AI solution. And all that in a responsible manner.'

What can you expect from the new master?

The AAI master's degree is a one-year full-time course for HBO or WO bachelors with a technical background (HBO-ICT, Applied Mathematics or similar). Students follow a joint program for one semester and do a graduation assignment in one of the Applied AI labs in the second semester.
