During the last holiday at the beginning of May, Marianne Bossema, PhD candidate at Digital Life, visited Aalborg University in Denmark and the RELATE Research Laboratory for Art and Technology. She loved talking to Professor Elizabeth Jochem and her team about their research into creative collaboration with robots.

Robotics rehabilitation

Marianne was also allowed to participate in the Aalborg Symposium in Advances in Rehabilitation Robotics. It was impressive to see how researchers can make an impact with robotic technology for the rehabilitation and support of people with movement problems. They develop exoskeletons and other wearable robotics in a human-centred, holistic way, and follow patients over time.

A good example was the ‘tongue-based interface’, a mouthguard with sensors. This allows people with a spinal-cord injury in one of the upper vertebrae to control robots and be more self-reliant.

Call

Lots of inspiration and food for thought for Marianne’s PhD research, about how creative cooperation between man and machine can be of added value for specific groups of elderly people. She is currently looking for interviews with older visual artists, and artists or therapists who draw or paint with the elderly. If you know people who might be interested in this, please let Marianne know! (m.bossema@hva.nl)
