The Development of an Intelligent Healthcare Environment that Supports Healthcare Professionals

CAUSE
The problem addressed by this research project is the high workload of care professionals in dementia care. Due to an increase in the number of elderly people with dementia, the demand for care is increasing, while the shortage of care professionals is growing. This workload can be greatly reduced by using smart technological innovations such as an Intelligent Care Environment.

HOW DOES AN INTELLIGENT CARE ENVIRONMENT WORK?
An Intelligent Care Environment uses sensor techniques and uses Artificial Intelligence (AI) to deliver personalized care by identifying and responding to care needs. The Intelligent Care Environment works together with the care professional. This solution direction is further elaborated in this project together with four healthcare parties and three innovative SME organisations.

Just-in-time adaptive interventions (JITAI) are developed based on the case ‘Support with food and drink’, so that the healthcare professional is supported in performing certain care tasks.
An example of an intervention is giving the person-adjusted sensory stimuli (sounds, lights and projections) at the right time that stimulate seniors to eat. Such interventions reduce the pressure on the healthcare professional and improve the quality of care.

ATTENTION TO HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS
Not only the integration of the AI modules is important, but also how the AI is ‘shown’ to the healthcare professional. That is why this project also pays extra attention to the interaction between healthcare professionals and the Intelligent Healthcare Environment, which increases ease of use and allows both client and healthcare professional to experience a higher degree of autonomy.

By further developing the prototype of the Intelligent Care Environment in healthcare institutions in collaboration with various healthcare professionals and paying attention to the development of AI and Interaction with the system, the wishes and needs of the healthcare professionals can be integrated into the Intelligent Care Environment. This is done in three iterations, with the three successive available living labs becoming increasingly complex and realistic.

The project has been featured in the first press newsletter of the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (2025).

AI-based art interventions for the benefit of neighbourhood for people with dementia.

Social contacts and encounters in the neighbourhood are important for the people who live there. It also encourages community residents to live together and, in particular, people with early dementia. Artificial Intelligence artworks are rich in interaction and promote social contact, but in practice many dilemmas arise where democratic participation is at stake. The project ‘It takes a village to grow old’ emphasizes the importance of working together with citizens on a dementia-friendly neighbourhood.

The aim is to conduct research together with the Vondel/Helmersbuurt in Amsterdam into AI art objects in public space to stimulate encounters between people (with and without dementia) in the neighbourhood. The project responds to the need of people with dementia to continue living at home in the neighbourhood where they feel comfortable and safe.

The evaluation is also carried out jointly, looking at the effect of the AI art interventions on social interaction in the neighbourhood. In this way, the project uses the experiential knowledge of citizens (with dementia) as well as professional knowledge (care and welfare, AI and art), and academic knowledge (citizen participation, AI and smart living environment) to design meeting places in this neighbourhood.

In the project we want to learn in practice how participatory work towards a dementia-friendly neighbourhood takes shape between all participants. The starting point is that this process in itself already has added value for interaction in the neighbourhood. The project thus explores the dynamics between AI art interventions, place-making and social health based on the citizens science approach.

The research leads to: 1) (design) principles for social interaction between local residents (with dementia), 2) AI art interventions, 3) strategies to design public space together with citizens so that public familiarity and experienced neighbourliness are promoted and 4 ) validity criteria including the ethics of participatory design.

In recent years, Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences has acquired a great deal of knowledge and experience in developing and researching the triangle of Exercise, Nutrition and Creative Technology. For example, researchers have developed applications in which vulnerable groups are encouraged to adopt healthy exercise and eating behaviour using creative technology. Think of the VITAMIN intervention for vital Amsterdam elderly and the exercise app Foxfit for children with asthma. New projects often start from scratch while many core components are generic, the technology required is comparable and the desire to collect the data at source is universal.

Well-functioning e-Health applications require the right data collection, for example the analysis of exercise patterns. The output is used to encourage healthy behaviour; offline via healthcare professionals or online via persuasive technology. If the project group properly sets up this infrastructure in a modular platform, researchers will be able to use the technical basics for multiple target groups in the future.

OBJECTIVE
The project team creates a springboard that realizes both more efficient development of future applications and faster implementation in practice.

METHOD
In the inventory phase, the project team draws up a package of technical requirements (functionalities, flexibility, safety and the like) and substantive requirements (interface, link with, for example, pedometers or existing applications). As soon as the requirements are clear, the researchers develop a prototype.

EXPECTED RESULTS / PRODUCTS
A modular system that researchers can extend to different target groups. This system forms an essential basis for several future subsidy applications within People in Movement.

SOCIAL IMPACT
This project provides an essential basis for future projects in which researchers use nutrition, exercise and creative technology to motivate at-risk groups to live healthier lives. In the coming years, for example, researchers within Mensen in Beweging (People in Motion) will focus on developing a blended intervention for vulnerable elderly people.

CONTRIBUTION RESEARCH AND EDUCATION
As a result of this project, researchers no longer have to develop a new platform from scratch for each project and think about management and infrastructure. They can further develop applications more quickly, build better on previous work for new grant applications and spend more resources on substantive research. This contributes to the quality and accessibility of the platforms, because researchers guarantee good security requirements and data storage within their projects (FAIR principles).

This project partakes in the SPRONG program People in Motion.

Er vindt een grootschalige technologische transformatie plaats, waarbij gebouwen en gebouwonderdelen steeds ‘slimmer’ gemaakt kunnen worden. Echter, deze technologische vooruitgang gaat gepaard met een verandering.

A large-scale technological transformation is taking place, whereby buildings and building components can be made increasingly ‘smarter’. However, this technological progress is accompanied by a change. Not only in the way building’s function, but also in the way they are developed and built.
In addition to major technological changes, influential social changes are also taking place; aging and greater grey pressure are two examples of this. This project aims to develop an interactive living room that helps people with dementia to live independently at home for longer. Stimulating the ability to independently perform General Daily Operations (GDO) is the most important focus area in maintaining and increasing the quality of life of this group. The interactive living room to be developed aims to support and stimulate this GDO, mobility and orientation.

The interactive living room is being developed by various small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) that have technology that can contribute to the above goal. In addition, HAN, HvA, Fontys and TU / e are involved as knowledge partners in the project.

The aim of the project is two-fold:
- An approach for the development of interactive building components (development of a toolbox)
- One innovative and interactive space (the interactive living room), tested in two living labs.

The first living lab will serve as a technical test in which the first prototype can be improved. The second living lab is in DrieGasthuizenGroep, where a second prototype is installed and where the reaction, acceptance and the effect on residents, care and informal care can be viewed. This public partner is involved in the entire design process, so that the input and needs of these different stakeholders are introduced early in the process. This iterative process will ultimately not lead alone to an interactive living room that better meets the needs of the user, but also to a better acceptance for implementation in practice.

The project ‘The interactive living room – Guiding Environment’ is a SIA-RAAK SME project (secretary: HAN).

In the eHealth Users Guild, entrepreneurs work together with the elderly, family and carers on the successful deployment and marketing of modern supporting technology.

The project offers an open work and learning environment in which we experience, co-create and integrate innovative eHealth applications towards the desired culture change and care innovation.

Central question
‘How do you make the choice for eHealth (easier) in daily practice?’

Reason and challenge
Within the ‘Silver Economy’ expectations are high with regard to eHealth products and services that can support the self-reliance and well-being of the elderly at home. In practice, it is not always so nice and easy: the elderly and their formal and informal carers adopt modern technology with difficulty. The business community speaks of an ‘implementation infarction’.

Solution
To sustainably boost the economic power of the ‘Silver Economy’, the ‘eHealth User Guild’ project focuses on the successful implementation (including awareness, user-friendliness and revenue model) of eHealth services and products to support the elderly, healthcare providers and entrepreneurs. Through experiencing, co-creating and integrating eHealth applications, entrepreneurs in Living Labs work with the elderly and carers on the much-needed cultural shift towards the successful deployment of eHealth at home.

The intended results of this project after three years are:

Strengthening the ‘Silver Economy’ with a maximum of 17 internationally marketable eHealth innovations;

Give regional, innovative SMEs access to ‘The eHealth User Guild’, plus to a regional, open eHealth implementation environment to strengthen and accelerate eHealth innovations – also to be used after the project period;

A minimum of 225 eHealth applications, social and technological, integrated by the elderly and those involved in at least 225 homes in the Amsterdam metropolitan area;

Forming a broad eHealth scale-up coalition of at least 900 eHealth conscious elderly, 30 eHealth expert (home) care professionals and 60 involved organizations;

Making organizations future-proof by healthcare providers through integration of eHealth in the range of services, also after the project period.

In this way we work together for acceptance of digital care!

The Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences is especially involved in the implementation research and also as an entrepreneur from the Hipper Academy.
The purpose of this implementation study is to develop a method for eHealth implementation together with users (elderly and healthcare professionals) and entrepreneurs. This should provide practical tools for users to actually use modern assistive technology in practice (to support the daily functioning of older people).

In this research project, eHealth implementation is studied at two levels:
1. the process of implementation of eHealth innovations by users;
2. (successful) implementation of approximately 17 concrete eHealth innovations based on acceptance, integration and upscaling.
