The ToP program is a national evidence-based intervention for very preterm children (<32 weeks gestation) and their parents, aimed at improving parent-child interaction and the development of the preterm child.

Good information provision about the development and health of the premature child is associated with better developmental outcomes. That is why knowledge transfer is one of the strategies of the ToP programme. This knowledge transfer takes place during 12 home visits.

Preliminary research showed that parents and paediatric physiotherapists (SMEs) need additional information about, for example, sleep, development, behaviour and nutrition. The ToP paediatric physiotherapists also indicated that the group of vulnerable parents with limited health skills benefited less from the information transfer that takes place during the intervention. They endorse the importance of providing clear and accurate information to parents.

The moderately preterm born children (32-34 weeks of pregnancy) are currently not eligible for the ToP programme, while the problems experienced by children and parents are very similar to the very preterm born children. An online information module (E-ToP) for increasing parents’ knowledge and understanding of the consequences of preterm birth and counselling their child is seen as promising by SME professionals. Paediatric physiotherapists see opportunities to reach a wider target group with this module.

The research question in this project is: ‘How can paediatric physiotherapists, in addition to the ToP programme, transfer more knowledge and insight to parents in an accessible and understandable way about the development of their very and moderately preterm child and about parenting after preterm birth?’

In the first phase of this project, the online application will be developed in co-creation with the paediatric physiotherapists, parents and other stakeholders. In creative workshops and focus groups, including parents with limited health skills, the functionalities, content and shortcomings of the online application are examined. In the second phase, the developed program is examined in a feasibility study (n=80) for applicability, usability and satisfaction. Impact on the professional field and education will take place during and after the project.

The theme of developing, improving and deploying creative and participatory methods to engage people in research for well-being through digital means (‘reaching out’) as it is at the heart of research and design at Digital Life and partners has been revived by COVID. Due to COVID’s lack of opportunities for researchers, professionals and students to involve people physically and in close proximity, to interact with them, to visualize iteratively and to collect data together with them for desirable and responsible digital and creative innovation, the theme has become more relevant than ever.

All the research and design of Digital Life depends on (transparent) data collection, physical interaction and creative imagination of digital possibilities with, by and for people, mainly digitally, at a distance for the past eighteen months alone. The COVID pandemic is a communal experience that has permanently changed digital practices, users and professionals.

Even after COVID, the need will continue to arise to involve and connect people in our research and design, and to bridge distances for creative innovation and well-being, for example because they will not always be able to participate and interact physically for all kinds of reasons.

Knowledge sharing about the new situation and participatory methods of research and design are now necessary to support (welfare) needs of (vulnerable) groups in the digitizing society.

However, the current knowledge and methodologies for participatory and creative research are by no means all suitable for physical and digital use in this time and context, so that the following question is central to this project: ‘In what ways can we develop and deploy methods to study and subsequently promote well-being when physical proximity is complex?’

Think of characteristics of companies, homes, residents and the immediate environment. In addition, changes such as the energy transition, aging population, cutbacks in healthcare and COVID are leading to a need for renewal in the approach to security issues and in the sharing of information between residents and, at first instance, the government.
A data-driven approach to social issues can lead to an improvement in quality of life, more security and innovation. Unfortunately, unlocking the available information is still a challenge.

In addition to legal regulations and organizational interests, public values ​​must also be safeguarded with regard to personal data. Individuals, in this context especially the residents, play an important role in this. First of all, some of the relevant information held by organizations concerns personal data. Residents will therefore have to give permission for sharing. In addition, residents themselves also have more and more (sensor) information that they want to share and that can be relevant in tackling social issues.

This project focuses on the question: ‘How can a desirable data-driven approach to social issues lead to an improvement in quality of life, more security and innovation?’ Specifically, it is about being able to share information conditionally in emergency situations: which scenarios of data exchange are possible and especially desirable?
A broad consortium including the Municipality of Amsterdam, the National Police and the Amsterdam-Amstelland Safety Region is working on real-time location-based data exchange in case of housing-related incidents. Citizen participation and public values – such as transparency, data control and people first – play a leading role.

It jeopardizes our most fundamental needs for social contact, health and particularly happiness.
Hence, the pandemic seems to be pushing us to craft and develop new creative, digital and intelligent practices, solutions and understandings; new ways of connecting, interacting, being physical and being distant. Consequently, people such as in the creative industry have begun to respond to challenges such as corona-tracing and social distancing by means of technology.
The COVID-19 situation and regulation further seem to have accelerated a turn towards digitization as to play a larger and more permanent role in our lives, and as almost to replace our physical presence. This virtual move and its rather invisible, abstract nature impacts on issues as users’ autonomy, control, privacy and digital self-reliance. Hence, as the accessibility and transparency of the workings of technology and data collection are at stake, the risk is now that underrepresented and vulnerable groups in the digital society, namely elderly, digital illiterates and (visually) impaired people are being left out.

On the other hand, the new digital situation and technological developments such as accessible maker tools, tangible interfaces, Internet of Things and smart sensing also create various new participative and empowering opportunities, particularly for progressing beyond the screen, and augmenting social, mental and physical wellbeing. E.g., as motivating factor for using new smart digital ways for supporting physical exercise, for smart remote detection of public sentiment and crowds, or creatively using robots to serve drinks or medicines at a 1.5 metre distance. Especially now, new tools, methods and knowledge are needed for adequately and responsibly designing and deploying such new ‘physical’ creative and digital (dis)connected ways.

Apart from affecting how we physically interact, design and make, the current COVID-19 situation has also caused us particularly to turn in how we approach face-to-face research. The question is how can we study and come up with successful and thoughtful tacit solutions when we cannot even be present? How can we develop new understandings when we cannot physically and visually observe those changes and collect data, for example from elderly in care homes? How can we develop those new understandings and tacit knowledge when we cannot even co-create physical prototypes together?
This calls for new participatory and creative research approaches and solutions -particularly for bridging the digital and physical divide. Think of remote physical making and particularly co-creation in place; other forms of data collection and creative research practices in a 1.5 metre-distant society. We propose to explore new co-creative methods that are needed for enabling responsible, tangible insights and grasp on what is happening now. This in relation to happy and healthy living during the pandemic itself and in the broader creative picture of our current long-term distant digital society. By collectively creating, studying, collecting data and sharing new (visual and palpable) insights and best practices, the idea is to better adapt to this situation and reinvent appropriate digital, physical and co-creative solutions and strategies for remote research and design in a smart, participatory and responsible 1.5-metre society.

To conclude, for supporting social, physical and mental wellbeing, this proposal focuses on new physical participative ways of digital and co-creative methods in times of virtual and distant connectedness.

The focus in this project is on learning how to apply the FAIR principles and exploring the implementation within the People in Motion (MiB) program.
In view of the recent circumstances, we also pay attention to the development of FAIR data on the corona virus (see below).

Challenges with reusing data

Much research data is unknown or disappears afterwards on disks, servers and in attics where no one can ever find it again. And when researchers can retrieve such data, they are most likely not to know under what conditions these are accessible to others. And if other institutions have similar data, these are probably not interchangeable because everyone uses their own data formats and descriptions. In short, reusing research data is virtually impossible, while more can be done with data than just answering one research question within one research project.

FAIR and machines

Data must also be findable, accessible, exchangeable and reusable for machines (computers). A machine must be able to recognize ‘automatically’ for whom certain data is or is not accessible. And a machine needs to understand that different terms can mean the same thing (e.g. ‘height’ and ‘length’) and that the same term (e.g. “HR”) can refer to different concepts. Therefore, the project team uses semantic web and linked data techniques, based on the foundations of the World Wide Web.

The human measure

Making data FAIR (FAIRification) naturally also has an ethical and human side. Most of the data in question comes from people who have taken part in an investigation, have taken measurements and who have made their, sometimes sensitive, data available for a specific purpose. How do you prevent computers and algorithms from running away with this data? What do participants think of their data being used for follow-up research? How can participants have better control over this? In FAIR terminology: what are the conditions under which data is Accessible (FAIR’s ‘A’) in order to be able to Reuse it (FAIR’s ‘R’)?

The challenge

The current way of working makes reuse of data by linking data sets or enriching data sets with databases of hospitals, companies or municipalities, very difficult. Let alone that these data are ‘machine-actionable’. If we optimally want to use data and machines within the People in Motion (MiB) program, it is essential to have FAIR data.

Goal

The focus in this project is on learning to apply the FAIR principles and exploring the implementation within the People in Movement, Urban Vitality program. The main goal is to investigate how project teams can use the FAIR principles for (re) using data more efficiently, more effectively and in more attractive ways.

What does it contribute to practice + research + education?

  • The project team shares the acquired knowledge and experiences through guest lectures and project forms with, for example, ICT students. In the minor Software for Science of the HBO-ICT program, lecturers pay attention to developing FAIR software, making data FAIR and how to do this in a responsible manner.
  • The project team discusses the role they play in making their research data FAIR with lecturers, researchers and the HvA data steward community.
  • Promoting transparency, efficiency and collaboration in research, and future-proofing data in a critical, creative and responsible manner.

Method

The project team uses a method for the FAIRification Process that other project teams have used before. This process requires a multidisciplinary team in which data stewards form a central part.

Results

Various tools (software, working methods, training and materials and data) have been made available for the FAIRification of research data from the People in Movement program.

However, it is often unclear to professionals how the individual older person can be provided with suitable activities that fit with the person’s capabilities, individual preferences, personal characteristics or general context.

With this project, we investigated the characteristics and (digital) preferences that influence engaging in exercise activities. The ultimate goal was an inventory for tailor-made exercise advice for the elderly: developing an (decision) aid that supports healthcare professionals and older adults in finding the fight (digital) exercise solution.

This preliminary research focused on novel approaches for supporting older adults and healthcare professionals in finding suitable (digital) exercise activities. With the help of creative techniques (such as remote discovery sessions with MIRO) and the ‘one week in the life of’ activity toolkit, we aimed to broaden our view with regard to the question of articulation and subsequently to a better understanding of the true needs of the older adults and other parties involved.

How long does a train need to be to have 1 million YouTube-members travel at the same time? The Amsterdam University of applied sciences (HvA), the Waag Society and students from the St. Jan school together will investigate and create fun and interesting data physicalizations. Those are physical representations of big data, that you can really actively see and touch instead of on a screen or in a book.

Invisible data in a computer-controlled society
We increasingly live in an invisible world of data. Societal and technological developments, such as the rise of mass-production and distribution of products, digital techniques, and small intelligent devices have contributed to a world that can be characterized by virtual products and invisible, complex data transactions in which data and its usage is increasingly invisible. With the advent of “Big data” and computing intelligence, information is and can be increasingly produced, collected, analysed, shared and used. Additionally, with surveillance technology, everyday life can be routinely monitored. However, the underling processes and implications of such pervasive data systems are not always clearly seen, communicated or discussed with the public and consumer.

Physicalization in education
The growing collection of ‘big’ data and other technological means does not necessarily and directly lead to more knowledge, insights and skills. Still, new technological developments, such as digital fabrication in Fab lab-environments offer the possibility to make digital data more physical and so understandable. From the education perspective there is a demand for knowledge and understanding for enabling students to embrace and shape these developments, and increase 21st-century skills.

The aim of ‘Revealing design’ is to uncover the potential of data physicalization –making data tangible– as a way to support the 21st-century skills communicating, critical thinking and creativity. The primary goal is to investigate the potential value of data physicalization in education.

On April 23, 2018 we celebrated the kick-off of Zichtbaar slimmer (Revealing design) WITH cake and creative physicalization. Read here the detailed visual report..

On June 14, 2018 we held a try-out workshop Data physicalization in which the participants got to actively engage with making data tangible. The workshop @ de Waag was open to everyone! See this site for details, and here the workshop findings.

On the 19th of September 2018, we conducted a design session with teachers at the St Jan school. This is an important part in the co-creation process in which the project partners a collaboratively working on a successful teaching format for data physicalization and 21st-century skills.

After that, almost 100 children and teachers of the St. Jan school actively worked during the consecutive weeks on data physicalizations around the school project theme of friendship. The children of groups 7 and 8 made their own collected data tangible and physical for experiencing data in a different way.
On October 19, 2018, the children proudly presented their data physicalizations to their parents, teachers and the younger classesplease also see this news item). We hebben ook een video gemaakt van de resultaten.

In December 2018, there was another Data physicalization workshop for HvA Master Students in Teaching Economics. Many students stated that they wanted to apply this in their future teaching.

On March 15, 2019, we evaluated the research findings with the project partners, namely teachers of the elementary school St. Jan. We visualized and presented the results of the research in a booklet. See also this news item.
Furthermore, we discussed future directions and elaborated on important factors for a successful data physicalization lesson.

On the 11th of April, 2019, there was a Maker Education club evening at the Waag society in Amsterdam with a workshop and discussion around data physicalization for everyone in the field of maker education (namely Amsterdam’s teachers from elementary and high schools and library professionals).

On the 5th of May, 2019, Marije Kanis presented the vision of making physical at the international and prestigious CHI conference in Glasgow.
