‘Virtual human Innovation for a Value-Aligned Lectorate Development Infrastructure’

Vanuit Digital Life is available for download associate lector Child Technology Interaction Simone de Droog betrokken.
An increasing number of older people are recovering at home following a stay in a geriatric rehabilitation centre.

Developing an AI Assistant to Support Geriatric Rehabilitation at Home

An increasing number of older people are recovering at home following a stay in a geriatric rehabilitation centre. The REHABOT project is developing a smart AI assistant that supports older people during their recovery at home and helps healthcare professionals gain a better understanding of the recovery process.

Reason

Due to the ageing population, pressure on the healthcare system is rising rapidly. At the same time, older people are spending increasingly shorter periods in care facilities following a hospital or rehabilitation stay, meaning that a large proportion of their rehabilitation takes place at home.

Digital rehabilitation platforms and sensor technology make it possible to support patients at home and monitor their progress remotely. However, these systems also present challenges. Healthcare professionals often lack context regarding patients’ home situations, making it difficult to interpret sensor data. Digital feedback also frequently lacks the personal nuance of face-to-face support.

This creates a need for technology that not only collects data, but also helps to better understand it and to support patients in a way that is both clear and motivating.

Goal

REHABOT is developing an AI-supported rehabilitation system that helps older people recover at home and supports healthcare professionals with remote monitoring and guidance.

The project is investigating how artificial intelligence can contribute to more personalised, understandable and context-aware support during the rehabilitation process.

Expected outcomes

The project delivers:

An AI-powered home rehabilitation assistant for older people.

A digital platform for monitoring and support by healthcare professionals.

New insights into human-centred AI applications in healthcare.

Enhanced support for home rehabilitation and greater opportunities for personalised remote support.

In addition, REHABOT helps to reduce the pressure on geriatric care and supports independent recovery at home.

An Assistive Affective Maths Robot for primary school children

Children’s maths performance is declining. At the same time, the shortage of primary school teachers is increasing. The teaching time available is spent on the cognitive aspects of maths: ensuring that children understand and master the basic skills. But maths is a subject in which negative emotions also play a significant role – more so than in other subjects. And those emotions can have a negative impact on maths performance.

Although teachers agree that emotional aspects are important, they lack the time, knowledge, skills and appropriate tools to address these systematically. This gave rise to the idea of developing a robot assistant for teachers that takes children’s emotions towards maths into account. Based on brief, child-friendly micro-check-ins, the robot can deploy appropriate emotion-regulation strategies where necessary. In this way, both the cognitive and affective aspects of maths can be addressed, without placing additional time pressure on teachers.

From heart health to action and support in the local community

In Amsterdam districts where many residents have a low socioeconomic position, people often face a higher risk of cardiovascular disease and limited access to care. This creates a paradox: those most at risk often seek help only when symptoms have become severe.

During our HARTstikke Gezond community health weeks, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar and BMI are measured in local neighbourhoods. Yet the core problem is not the lack of measurements, but the absence of an effective mechanism that connects these biomedical values to personal, social and environmental context.

AI as a Bridge develops this missing link: an AI-triage system that translates measurements into clear advice, and a connected matchbot that converts this advice into concrete actions and suitable local activities. Together, these systems help residents
better understand their results, turn advice into action, and take earlier steps towards improving their health.

On Friday 19 June, De Omval Theatre in Diemen was the place to be: it hosted the RoboUnity Robot Festival, organised in collaboration with AUAS students, as part of the celebrations marking 800 years of Diemen. During this accessible and well-attended festival, residents of all ages and backgrounds were introduced to various social robots, interactive demonstrations and examples of how robotics can be used in everyday life.

Dark Tech

Students from the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences’ ICT programme were also present with two interactive robot demonstrations, developed at Studio Dark Tech on behalf of the Digital Life research group. Under the supervision of Professor Somaya Ben Allouch and Associate Professor Simone de Droog, the students explored how social robots can help foster connections between residents of Diemen.

Robot Riddles

For the festival, the students developed, amongst other things, a robot that showcased dance and music from different countries. Visitors were challenged to guess which country the music or dance came from. This sparked conversations about culture, recognition and differences in a playful way. The demo was enthusiastically received by young and old alike.

Social earning capacity

The festival demonstrated how technology can stimulate curiosity, interaction and conversation in an accessible way. For many visitors, it was the first time they had actually interacted with a robot. RoboUnity thus served as a fine example of how practice-oriented research and education can contribute to social cohesion.

How the Dream Robot helps imaginative children get through challenging moments

A jab, a tube, or going under anaesthetic: many children find these things nerve-wracking. A new research project is working on a unique solution: the Dream Robot. This robot distracts children through guided imagery. This is a proven method whereby a child can relax through a positive story.

The Dream Robot can move, talk and listen. It looks at children, waves and tells stories in a calm voice. Arine Vlieger, a paediatrician at St. Antonius and an expert in guided imagery, explains: “Fear often plays just as big a role as the procedure itself. If you can reduce that anxiety, the whole experience becomes more bearable. For the child, but also for parents and healthcare providers.”

What is guided imagery?

Guided imagery – also known as medical hypnosis – is less daunting than it sounds. It’s all about focus and suggestion. Arine explains: “When a child imagines something vividly, the body reacts to it. For example: the child listens to a story about swimming underwater and sees all sorts of little fish in their imagination. Then the robot says that sometimes little fish might swim up against your nose. At that very moment, the probe is inserted. The child feels the ‘little fish’ instead of the medical procedure. That’s how the brain and the body work together.”

Guided imagery has been used in hospitals for some time, including by medical educators. However, they cannot always be present during every stressful moment. The Dream Robot project is investigating whether this support can also be provided by a robot.

A tailor-made story

Three versions of the Dream Robot have been created, for different medical situations: blood tests, tube insertions and anaesthesia. Arine helped develop the stories that the Dream Robot uses. “The child chooses a pleasant setting themselves, such as the beach or a hot-air balloon, and builds a story together with the robot,” explains Arine. “For children undergoing anaesthesia, the child first meets the robot in the day surgery unit. The robot accompanies them to the operating theatre and continues telling the story calmly whilst the anaesthetist puts the mask on. Because the child chooses the story themselves and is actively involved in it, the moment of the procedure is less stressful.”

Initial feedback is positive

“We noticed that the children taking part in the research project were completely absorbed by the Dream Robot and fully focused on the story it was telling. Even when someone walked in, they didn’t look up or turn around. Staff and parents also reacted enthusiastically,” says Simone de Droog enthusiastically. Simone is an Associate Lecturer in the Digital Life research group at Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and the project’s principal investigator. “Parents noticed that their child was relaxing, and that made them feel calmer too.”

The test also highlighted areas for improvement. For example, the robot’s volume was too low, particularly for children who have ear tubes fitted.

Cooperation between hospitals

The Dream Robot is a collaboration between Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences, Utrecht University of Applied Sciences, St. Antonius Hospital, Wilhelmina Children’s Hospital, Beatrix Children’s Hospital, Erasmus MC and various robotics and hypnosis experts.

The project has been running for two years and is nearing completion. All the findings are now being collated and incorporated into a step-by-step plan for implementation. Following this, a grant will be applied for to ensure that children experience far less anxiety in hospital in the future.

The research team from the Digital Life research group and the Netherlands Cancer Institute have been selected for ZonMw funding. How can doctors and artificial intelligence (AI) work together more effectively to improve cancer care? With this question as its starting point, the research project ‘Collaborative Intelligence: Doctor-AI Collaborations for Oncological Treatment Planning and Monitoring’ will be carried out over the next four years. Professor Somaya Ben Allouch and Associate Professor Bin Yu from the Digital Life research group are working closely on this with the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI). The University of Amsterdam (UvA) and the ELSA Lab Health Inequity are also project partners.

Working together effectively

The project focuses on developing ‘collaborative intelligence’: effective collaboration between doctors and AI in the field of oncology. AI is already capable of quickly and accurately detecting, localising and monitoring tumours based on medical scans. However, this technology is still used only to a limited extent in clinical practice.

That is striking, particularly given that radiologists face high workloads, staff shortages and an increased risk of burnout. Many tasks in oncological imaging, such as preparing radiotherapy plans, are essential, but also repetitive and mentally taxing.

Relevance to everyday practice

A key objective of the project is therefore not only to develop smart AI, but also to design applications that are well suited to everyday practice in hospitals. The focus is on human-AI interaction: how can we ensure that technology actually supports doctors, rather than creating extra work or uncertainty?

The consortium, comprising the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences (HvA) and the Netherlands Cancer Institute (NKI), is one of 31 research teams to receive funding under the ZonMw Open Competition, from a total budget of over 26 million euros. The competition is known for its fierce competition, which makes the award and high rating of this project all the more remarkable.

Doctor-AI Collaborations for Cancer Treatment Planning and Monitoring

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is transforming the way we interpret cancer scans. Research shows that AI can detect cancer faster and often more accurately, delineate tumours and monitor treatment outcomes, sometimes better than doctors. Yet AI is still only used to a limited extent in hospitals, both in the Netherlands and worldwide. This is worrying, as radiologists face high workloads, staff shortages and the risk of burnout.

Some tasks in oncological imaging, such as measuring tumours or marking them for radiotherapy, are crucial but also repetitive and mentally exhausting. AI can take over a large part of this routine work. This leaves doctors with more time and energy for what really matters: complex decisions and collaboration with other specialists to plan the best care.

The challenge is not only to build smart AI, but also to ensure that this technology fits seamlessly into hospital processes and actually supports doctors in their daily work.

Innovating Data-Driven Everyday Health Interventions
